The air intake is profiled too and the revised rear wing is more aerodynamic. A numerous of small aerodynamic details which associated to new technical characteristics return this new very promising version.
The 3 yellow Renault Alpine can be distinguished by the color of the cockpit partition, rear wing supports and inside the air intake
on the roof (blue-white-red). The fourth A442 is entered at lastminute with the sponsorship of Bendix by Hugues de Chaunac. During the test days, only Porsche 936 of Ickx-Pescarolo succeeds in raising itself among the Renault Alpine fleet. Car number 7 starts in 4th position. Car number 8 starts in the second position and car number 9 takes the first place on the grid. Didier Pironi on car number 16 starts the race in 5th position but retires in the first lap.

The car number 7 team assures its position between the 3rd and the 6th place during the first hours without meeting of major troubles. But the race stops abruptly for them in the middle of the night when a piston breaks in Indianapolis.

After 7 hours racing, stay there track that A442 n°9 of Jabouille Bell which leads the race in front of A442 car number 8 of Depailler and Lafitte. The Porsche car number 4 comes from the 41th position back to the second place in the early hours between A442 car number 9 and car number 8. When Jabouille returns into the pit shortly after 9 o'clock we change spark plugs and the car restarts but returns to the following lap to definitively stop there on leaky piston.

Porsche takes the lead of the race. The last one A442 in race is pushed in its cuttings off; Jürgen Barth defends his position tooth
