The fourteen thirty, the bad brother of the 124 was one of the most popular SEAT models of the 1970s and the beginning of the following. In the street it was an outstanding Berlina for the standards of the era; in rallies, a serious threat for more powerful, developed and reliable cars. The FU, acronym that accompanied more sporty versions were big words for young people who attempted to establish themselves in the top-level competition, like Carlos Sainz. The Madrid-born driver who in that era competed regularly with a Renault 5 or a SEAT Panda, had the opportunity to drive the1430 FU for the first and only time in his career. The unit that we reproduced corresponds to the 1982 Santa Teresa Rally. It was a car rented specifically for that race and
which had a 16-valve engine, something which was very rare until then, especially in a SEAT. At his young age of 20 years, Sainz already attracted the attention of the motor racing world, that pointed him out as a rising star. Accompanied by Juanjo Lacalle as co-pilot, his start in the Santa Teresa was devastating: he dominated the first two stages with ease with an amazingly stable drive for his age and his limited knowledge of the reactions of the car. In the third stage, however, a breakdown forced him to abandon. But the work was already done. The sceptics had convinced themselves that the boy had a special talent.
