After Le Mans 1992, the Peugeot 905 wins the 1000 km of Sukuza and also takes the 3rd place overall. From August Peugeot finishes first of theit first one (and the last one) WSC title. In Magny-Cours we celebrate the victory of the Alliot-Baldi teammates in front of Bouchut-Hélary. It is also the last appearance, during the tests, of the Evolution 2 Peugeot 905.
The Peugeot programme for 1993 is short and can be sumed up by the only one participation to Le Mans 24 Hours race. It has been decided to put aside the technical innovations of Evo2, (more convenient to a F1 program ?) and the EVO 1 Ter gets ready for a duel Peugeot-Toyota.
A new transverse gearbox to sequential commands is put in, as a result of which the new drawings of the back train with longer and more oblique wing supports. The exhaust pipes are not side any more but result in a wider and lower back diffuser.
At the start on June 19th, 1993, Toyota and Peugeot, with 3 engaged cars each, shared the first 6 lines of the starting grid. The Peugeot car number 2 of Philippe Alliot takes the pole position in front of Irvine's Toyota TS010 car number 36. The start is tempestuous and it only needs three laps and half so that the leaders overtake the backward competitors of the other categories. From the 4th lap, Irvine realizes the best time in race (3'36"140=226.520 kph) and drives Alliot into a corner. After one half hour hardly racing the former to keep the lead is driven to error in Mulsanne.
Irvine’s Toyota overtakes and takes the head and again improves during the 13th lap the lap time record (3'35"680=227.003 kph). After one hour of racing, Toyota car number 36 leads Peugeot car numbers 2,1 and 3 which are respectively, 2, 3 and 6th positions. Last Peugeot is 30 " behind the 2 other Toyota car numbers 37 and 38. Never granting more than 20 ' to the heading Toyota, the Peugeot 905 car number2 of Baldi is on the look-out for the refueling of the Japanese car to get back the lead again.
It is now done at 5:25 pm when the TS010 car number 36 concedes more than one minute that allows the Italian driver to refuel without losing his first place. In the 25th lap, after the collective refueling session, the balance is maintained because if car number 2 is in front of car number 36, the two other Toyota are in front of each two other Peugeot.
The 4th hour is particularly exhausting for the 2 brands. Peugeot car number 2 of Alliot-Jabouille falls on the 16th position at 7:39 pm and is relegated to 9 laps : the car must make a pit stop to repair an oil leak which even slowed down Toyota car number 36 of Sekiya who followed too closely and forced him to a big cleaning of windscreen.
Thierry Boutsen on 905 car number 1 fights against Lees on Toyota car number 38 who beats again the lap record in 3'33"09 in the 49th lap and comes back again at the head of the race. And Pierre-Henri Raphanel on Toyota car number 37 does not succeed resolving electronic problems and falls to the 35th rank to 20 laps of the leading cars.
While the sun sets on the track, Peugeot car number 1 and Toyota car number 38 face each other. Jan Lammers in the 83rd lap approaches his record established in 1992 to 2"150 by realizing once more for Toyota the best time lap with 3'34"410. But Irvine improves straightaway after by 184’’’.
At 10:51 pm, Fangio on Toyota car number 38 neck and neck with Peugeot car number 1 collapses the Lotus of Terada. It needs a 37’ pit stop to build the car. He falls then to the 11th position 10 laps behind the leading Peugeot car number 1. At 1:28 am the Andy Wallace’s Toyota meets with the gravel trap and must stop 33' to repair the caused damages. The Sekiya-Suzuli-Irvine team on Toyota car number 36 is only one to remain to thwart Peugeot ambitions.
Peugeot car number 2 of Philippe Alliot - Mauro Baldi - Jean-Pierre Jabouille comes back progressively and reaches at mid-race the 5th position overall. During the 10th hour, when Irvine seizes the lap record again there is a renewed hope in Toyota teams all the more when at mid-race he is back two laps behind the head.
At 3:20 am, Peugeot car number 1 of Fabi knows its first serious incident. Peugeot car number 3 of Geoff Brabham - Christophe Bouchut - Eric Hélary takes the lead in front of car number 1. Car number 2 raises itself to the fourth place. Irvine fights like a lion.
At 7:45 am, it is announced that Toyota car number 37 retires. In Toyota pits it is the consternation. Four hours before finish line while Toyota car number 38 of Lees-Lammers-Fangio resuscitates and goes back up to the 4th place, car number 36 falls on the 6th place. And if the three Peugeot teams do not yet know it, the definitive podium is at this time set. Peugeot car number 3 is ahead of car numbers 1 and 2. In the last hour racing Irvine finally succeeds in his Toyota the best lap record in the 326th lap in 3'27"47 and taking the 4th place.
Peugeot wins its second consecutive victory. The record of covered distance has been beaten by Peugeot. They have covered 375 laps for 5100 km.
After suffering setbacks in Formula 1, we will wait until 2007 so that Peugeot wishes a new victory in Le Mans.
