Winner
In 1992, it is the 60 edition of 24 hours of LeMans. It is also the second consecutive attempt for the Peugeot Talbot Sport team which hopes well to succeed Mazda. The general line of the car is appreciably different from season 91, but the cell remains the same one. For Le Mans, a special configuration; removed front wing, the back wing is lower and has been moved back to the maximum agreed by the regulation, and louvers on the front bonnet have been cancelled. The front mudguards receive projectors provided with gas-discharge lamp. At the time of the preliminary tests, Peugeot # 2 and 1 are respectively fastest behind the 3 Toyota TS010. The third Peugeot # 31$ occupies the sixth place on the starting grid. The rain is falling when the race begins. Philippe Alliot on # 2 precedes Yannick Dalmas and they make face in front of the Toyota. Whereas the night already fell, Mazda n°5 is inclined in front of Peugeot n°2 of Alliot-Baldi-Jabouille and which takes the 2 place behind Peugeot # 1. Before mid-race, the difference between the 2 Peugeot at the lead passed to 2 laps and Mazda # 5 is only one lap behind # 2. Behind the triplet Toyota (#8, 33 and 34) is waiting for the failure of the only one remaining Mazda.
The Peugeot # 31 goes up during the night in the 8 position. In the early morning, several pit-stops relegate Peugeot # 2 to the 5 place 6 laps behind # 1 which is now followed by the Mazda and two Toyota. The Mazda gearbox shows first signs of weakness. It is impossible to count either on the support of Peugeot # 31 which gives up on engine failure just like the Toyota # 7. The end of the race end is quieter for the leaders whose positions in fact are set since the end of the tenth hour. The second place of Toyota TS010 intercalated between the two Peugeot developed the race end and kept the suspense until the end. Winner after a second participation, 14 years after Renault, Peugeot again allows at a French firm to assert himself in the most famous race of the World.
